CineShack: An Independent Space project became a part of the Kültürkondu project supported under the second open call of the CultureCIVIC: Structural Support Grant Program. Within the scope of the project, the multi-purpose hall of the complex was re-organized and transformed into Mersinefil’s movie screening and event venue. Necessary technical equipment was purchased in order to make the venue suitable for activities and to be able to use it effectively. The project funded the purcahse of technical equipment including microphones, curtains, computers, sound systems and projection devices for screenings, interviews, panels and workshops, to make the venue suitable for screening sessions and workshops, and to make the venue capable of hosting over sixty participants.
The project aimed to make possible screening of short films, documentaries and political films, which cannot be found in the mainstream, and thereby create a new cinephile profile; to improve film watching culture in Mersin; to go beyond watching films and go one step further through events such as interviews, panels and workshops that took place in parallel with the screening sessions; and invited cinephiles in Mersin to think about fundamental human rights issues such as identity, class, environment and migration. The project thereby aimed to add an aesthetic dimension to the politics of rights through cinema, and to create publicity with the contribution of the favorable ground offered by cinema.
