Literature Island Marmara
Marmara Island Literature Days
August - December 2023
BALIKESİR
Marmara Island, one of Turkey's first summer resorts, was one of the favourite places of artists in the 1950s and 60s. In those years, the art and literature environment in Marmara was lively. Artists who were guests of the island included Marmara in their works. Artist Naile Akıncı is known for her Ekinlik and Marmara Island paintings. Yaman Koray's novel “Deniz Ağacı” (The Sea Tree) tells us about the fishermen of the Marmara Island.
Thanks to the “Literature Island, Marmara” project, literary activities will be held for 5 months (August-December) on Marmara, the second largest island of Turkey, located in Balıkesir province. The highlight of these events is the II. Marmara Island Literature Days (MAEG) which will be held on August 4-6, 2023. Along with MAEG, there will be a book club, children's meeting and online meeting activities will be held. Activities are planned to take place in all settlements of Marmara Island.
The project aims to revive the art and literature environment in Marmara. It is aimed to improve the experience acquired from MAEG organized in 2022 under the leadership of the applicant institutions and to make MAEG a traditional event. This will contribute to the rural development and tourism of Marmara. It will be possible for our citizens of the island, who are disadvantaged in accessing culture and arts services, to meet with writers and books. This project also aims to repeat, expand and increase the impact of imece, which is realized with local authorities, the tradesmen of the island and fellow countrymen.
