Missing Bricks

December 2023 - June 2024
ÇANAKKALE

“Missing Bricks” is a project that focuses on the women of the Şapköy village of the Ayvacık District of Çanakkale, constructing its artistic narrative style through the photography and multimedia storytelling techniques. The project focuses on the generation who had migrated from the village to Ayvacık due to financial and social reasons, and their parents in the village. It analyzes the life struggles, lives and economic gains of both generations through the rural-urban distinction. Within such context, the project aims to reveal, in the specific case of Şapköy, the socio-economic transformation created by female-oriented cooperatives in rural areas and their contribution to gender equality in an artistic context.

For such purpose, women who migrated from Şapköy to Ayvacık and Çanakkale Center will be photographed using deadpan aesthetics, which emphasizes themes such as “reification” and “alienation” in their “new” environments in which they live in the “urban” lifestyle. These portraits will be accompanied by vernacular photographs from family albums that emphasize women’s inner ties with the village, as well as images produced in contemporary places of their memories. The relationship between subject and space will gain a conceptual dimension by being constructed through portraits and accompanying memories. These photographs will be exhibited on the wall to be built to shape the public face of the village, and will turn into a reading that brings back together the generation that migrated from the village, i.e. the “missing bricks,” in an artistic context.
