Nefes Foundation for Arts and Culture believes that it can improve the social cohesion and harmony in Turkey, particularly between the Syrian community and the host community, through its musical and cultural activities. Founded in 2016 by young Syrian and Turkish people specialised in music and arts, the Foundation believes that the artistic and cultural production is important for the stability and the well-being of the society, especially for the societies that have faced psychological trauma and isolation as well as a loss of identity.
The activities of Nefes Music School are teaching of music instruments, exploration of music culture and introduction of children to the musical heritage. To achieve this, different courses are provided for many western and oriental music instruments and singing, in addition to providing the participants with musical culture classes and male/female choir.
In 2021, the number of enrolled students reached 60. In 2022, the school intends to enroll 40 additional students. Nefes Music School's teaching activities are designed to achieve Nefes Foundation's objectives. Nefes teaches music to both Syrian and Turkish students in mixed classes. Thus, this contributes to a better mutual knowledge of respective communities and improves the social cohesion and harmony in Gaziantep. In addition, Nefes students explore the common musical heritage of both communities through the practice of a music instrument. Finally, musical activities help children and young people build their personality, allow the expression of feelings, the experience of consistency and stability through the sustained practice of an instrument, enjoy the results of their efforts, all of which help to build a resilient personality.
This support contributed towards the rental cost of the premises of Nefes Music School, salaries of the music teachers and some part time staff as well as operating costs such as phone, internet, electricity, heating, maintenance etc.
