Performative Cob Construction Sculpture

May - November 2022
Sivaslı / UŞAK

The project features a sculpture built with materials obtained from a clay pit in the region and firing it with ancient methods. Primitive clay molding, mud brick kiln building and wood firing techniques were utilised during the making of the sculpture.

The project aimed to shed light on the primitive urges of the modern human being through physical and mental labor. Consequently, it focused on the essence of a tangible cultural object, created through material and abstract primitive practices, and based on a cultural action practiced in nature by a member of the human species.

The project was out in Sivaslı in the city of Uşak, known for its pottery traditions, where the ancient city of Sebaste is also located.

Onur Fındık

Born in 1989 in Niksar, Tokat, Onur Fındık studied ceramics and glass design at Dokuz Eylül University. He is currently working on his dissertation at the same university while teaching ceramics at Uşak University. As an artist, he has participated in numerous national and international symposia, workshops and exhibitions. Recently, his practice has focused on mud brick monumental sculpture with transformation and sustainability forming the basis of his work. This focus stems from the tangible and intangible relationship the human species has forged since prehistoric times. By removing the impact of modern habits and consumer culture that have been driven persistently since the Industrial Revolution, this experience of dialoguing with soil as raw material and building a form solely based on human labor creates an alternative existential plane. At the core of his practice is a desire to create a consistent conversation between ideas, materials, actions, and forms.
