Supported Projects Announced
The projects supported by the Grassroots Projects Grants in the second open call period have been announced. Grassroots Projects Grants aim to provide and to democratise access to cultural funding for small cultural organisations, operators and activists in promoting tolerance, non-discrimination, freedom of expression, and democratic processes in the shrinking civic space of Turkey. These grants are devised as an instrument to reach individuals and organisations that have an impact on local communities and audiences on a grassroots level.
A total of 264 applications were made to the call, which was open between 7 March and 11 April 2022. Applications that met the conditions of the Grassroots Projects Grants and filed all the compulsory application documents were submitted to the independent jury members after the technical evaluation by the CultureCIVIC project team. The applications were evaluated by the independent jury team, researcher and curator Eylem Ertürk, civil society expert Hamit Levent Evci, Goethe-Institut Istanbul Library Manager Sanem Yardımcı and the projects to be supported were determined.

Future Open Calls
CultureCIVIC supports projects that encourage cultural dialogue and public engagement, tolerance, freedom of speech, non-discrimination, social cohesion, individual freedoms and democratic processes in Turkey. Aiming to foster civil society involvement in the field of arts and culture, the programme is open to civil society organisations, initiatives, artists and any individuals, institutions and enterprises with a non-profit mindset. Initiated by Goethe-Institut Istanbul, Anadolu Kültür, Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV), Institut français de Turquie, and Danish Cultural Institute in Turkey, and in collaboration with the Embassy of the Netherlands in Turkey, CultureCIVIC is funded by the European Union.
Until March 2025, CultureCIVIC will make a total of 14 open calls for four different grant programs addressing different needs, entitled “Grassroots Projects”, “Structural Support”, “Inner-City Networking”, and “Art Production” and provide more than 1.6 million Euros to over 200 projects.
Applications for the third open call of the Grassroots Projects Grants will start on 27 June 2022. CultureCIVIC will hold the second open calls of Inter-City Networking and Structural Support Grants in August and October respectively. The open call calendar for 2022 can be viewed here.
While evaluating projects, priority is given to those supporting rights-based activities, bringing together actors from different ethnic, religious, linguistic backgrounds and giving special importance to cross-cutting issues such as promotion of gender equality, LGBTI+ rights, social cohesion, human rights, freedom of expression and children's rights.
