Invisible Women of Cinema

November 2023 - November 2024
KONYA

Invisible Women of Cinema aims to gather the archive of women’s films in digital medium in order to base the presence of female directors in Turkish Cinema history. By categorizing female directors’ films and women-oriented films and presenting short introductions of the same, the project aims to make the history of women in cinema visible to everyone. The project’s combination of film archiving and digital technologies has new meanings. Most importantly, the project is a memory study on female labor in Turkish Cinema, which produces new outputs accessible to the society for the present and for future generations. The project also incorporates a series of events aimed at bringing the history of women’s films to the attention of broader audiences. First of all, an online quiz will be designed for the website, where those interested in feminist film history can test their knowledge. In the final phase of the project, the entirety of the archive work will be published as a book. The printed publication is aimed at creating a basic reference point for the academia, the society and cinema lovers regarding the position of women in the creative processes of the Turkish Cinema. We hope that it becomes a digital database resource for anyone hoping to learn more about women’s position in the film industry!
