Urban Transformation like a Roman
November 2022 – June 2023
Turgutreis District/MERSİN
Urban Transformation like a Roman Project aimed to prevent the urban transformation project planned to be carried out in the Turgutreis Neighbourhood, where Roma people are densely populated, to be realized without considering their culture and lifestyle, and to take a counter-stance.
In this scope, under the management of Prof. Dr Nurseren Tor of MEU, Faculty of Fine Arts, large-scale paintings reflecting the Roma culture was displayed in various parts of the neighbourhood and this process was supported with various music, theatre, photography and performance activities. The Roma Theatre Group from Bandırma performed a theatre play about urban transformation in the neighbourhood, the Mersin Romany Orchestra gave a concert, and the Roma people were able to tell about their neighbourhoods from their own eyes through a photography workshop held with children. The project came to an end with a panel discussion and celebrations in the neighbourhood.
